About the Author
John Doorbar
John’s always been fascinated by why we do certain things and why we decide not to do others. It was a real mystery to him. So he researched into the science behind decision-making. Then 35 years ago, he read the book by Dr Robert Cialdini which he found fascinating. John finally understood how influence works. And the result?
This book in the field of communication skills training for 35 years.
He’s been teaching the ideas in this book ever since in his workshops, training, consulting and seminars.
John’s mission
John grew up as an extremely shy introvert. When visitors came to visit, he ran upstairs and locked himself in his wardrobe, only coming out when they had gone.
45 years later
Let us move on over the 45 years since the “wardrobe trick.”
John has now discovered how introvert managers are able to use their often-hidden gifts, to boost performance in their companies. They also want to be able to bring their message to the world, either locally or internationally. So, they need to speak to one or to many. So, he has decided to combine 3 aspects into his professional work in international business.
• Presenting with quiet confidence
• How introverts can bring their gifts to the world
• The 7 incredible principles of Ethical influence

A Personal Message
I’m really honored to have worked on this project with seven of my favorite influence professionals.
Each of my colleagues has his/her own very unique perspective on how real people can benefit by using these very powerful principles.
You will get a great many insights from all of them, and it will be great to hear about the results which you get as a result of reading their contributions.
My own chapter is about a field of research very close to my heart, namely,
How to use the 7 principles to get better results when you present. I hope you find this chapter helpful too.

John Doorbar’s Favorite Influence Story:
The Unsavoury Truth Behind Wine Tasting
Ever wonder if that expensive wine really tastes better? Well, John Doorbar has a tale that might just change how you think about your next glass of wine.
The Curious Case of the $10 vs. $90 Wine
Let’s dive into some surprising research that sheds light on our perceptions of wine. Imagine this: two groups of people taste the same wine from identical bottles, but there’s a catch—the price tags are different. One group thinks the bottle costs $10, while the other believes it’s a $90 treasure. According to studies by Hilke Plassman from the Institute of Technology in California, not only did the “expensive” wine taste better to the volunteers, but it also seemed to affect them physically, making their experience genuinely different. Yep, the mind plays tricks, and not just small ones!
When Experts Get Fooled
It gets even more interesting with Frederic Brochet’s experiment. He gathered some top wine experts and gave them a mid-range Bordeaux in two bottles—one labelled as a fancy “Grand Cru” and the other as simple “Vin de table.” Guess what? Not a single expert picked up on the trick. Both bottles, same wine, but oh, how the “Grand Cru” impressed everyone!
So, what’s the Big Deal?
John loves this story not just for its humor but also for its powerful insight into human psychology. It’s a perfect example of how our expectations, set by things like price or labels, can deeply influence what we think and feel.
Just Enjoy Your Wine!
John’s advice?
“Enjoy what you enjoy!” Don’t worry too much about the labels or the price tags. Your mind might be playing a bigger role in your wine preferences than you realize. So, pour yourself a glass, sit back, and savor it for what it is—just good wine.
This delightful story isn’t just a fun anecdote; it’s a reminder to trust your own taste and keep an open mind. After all, the best wine is the one you enjoy the most, no matter the label or the price.
